Okay, call me a copycat if you must. But after writing the Vegetable Soup blog http://toooldcripples.blogspot.com/2008/10/try-ityoull-like-it.html and then Ang making a batch, I just had to make some myself. The soup has aged in the refridgerator for 3 days now, blending all of the flavors into SUPER soup. And I'm telling you it is DELICIOUS!!!
The only change I made was to include some of my paternal Grandfather's favorite "sodie biscuits", these were a MUST whenever he made up a batch of soup. And I admit, he made a believer out of me. I just love these things. He used to roll them out thin and made them more like a cracker than a biscuit, but their purpose was to "soak up the juice". I make them thicker because that's the only way wifey likes them. And everybody knows, "If Momma Ain't Happy, NObody's Happy".
So here's the Soda biscuit recipe;
Soda Biscuits Recipe
2 cups flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon cream of tartar
1/2 Tablespoon shortening
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 cup milk
Mix all dry ingredients together, cut in shortening, add milk and mix to form a soft dough. Roll out on floured pastry board to a thickness of 1/2 inch. Cut with biscuit cutter. Place biscuits on greased baking pan. Bake in hot oven (425) for about 15 minutes.
Make them thinner and they get harder. Grandpa used to make’m like a thick cracker and used them only for soups or stews.

Just wondered over here from Danni's blog. (love the egg photo!) Will be trying your biscuit recipe with my daughter (age 10 and addicted to scones from our stint in NZ. At least yours look like I could pass them off as Barb's,our NZ neighbor's, scones.) Keep writing and living, I'll be back.
Hmmm. I think we are traveling along parallel plains.
Tonight we had crock pot pea soup (with green chile, of course) and home made bisquits. My family tells me that mine are like KFC bisquits and I never have leftovers. Darn :P
I love veggie soup. I may start that tomorrow morning in the crock pot...and make another batch of bisquits.
Right now we are craving warm comfort food as we got our first snow today and the temps have been in the 20's and 30's.
Brrr.

Oh, what a good husband you are!! Some men never do realize that if "momma ain't happy, nobody's happy"! And it takes so little to make us happy, it's worth the small effort, don't you think?
:-)
The soup and biscuits look YUMMY.
Ha! Your days have to be so much easier just knowing the "happy mama" suggestion. Good man.
The meal looks lovely.
Alan: Welcome, and I hope you enjoy them as much as I do. I think I enjoy them more for sentimental reasons than taste. I do make more flavorful biscuits but for soup and stew, I love these. Let me know how your turn out.
Lisa: there is a simple fix to your bisuit shortage...Make a bigger batch!! Do you have the recipe posted?
I love split be soup also, now your going to force me to make some too.
Way to soon for that four letter word. I hope it holds off here for at least another month.
I'll post you another comfort food soon.
Danni: Yes dear, what ever you say dear. (my wife hates it when I say that)
They were, make some soon and see for yourself.
Marcee: Thank you. I learned that lesson while living at home. See above.
That's so funny because *my husband* hates it when I do that to him! :-)
